Today I spent my very first thanksgiving away from my family. To be honest, when I signed up for this program and realized that I would be away during my favorite holiday, I knew I was going to have some issues with it. I didn’t really know what to expect today or how I would feel. It was weird not waking up in my bed/couch, going to the kitchen and eating cinnamon rolls that Allie makes religiously every single Thanksgiving and watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade with my family. It would also be weird not eating so much turkey that I cannot physically move and then slipping into a food coma only to wake up and watch football. Most of all, it would be weird spending my Thanksgiving without my family. But today made me appreciate everything that I do have and the amazing life that I live. So here is my list of things I’m grateful for today…
1) The fact that I got to skype with both sides of my entire family tonight when they were at dinner together.
2) I ate the best sandwich I’ve ever had in my entire life for lunch today. Cibatta bread, smoked ham, arugula, goat cheese, grilled eggplant and zucchini, mushrooms, and hot pepper spread.
3) The sandwich was only 3 euros.
4) I saw an Opera in the birthplace of all opera by the most famous opera composer in the world today.
5) I visited one of the most famous art museums in the world today.
6) I ended my day by riding home on the bus with the other people in my program and we all said what we were thankful for and complimented each other.
7) I’ve gotten the chance to spend 4 months in the most beautiful country in the world.
8) Travel
9) Even though I’m 5000 miles away from home, I still have the best support system of family and friends that I could ever ask for. And they remind me every single day how much they love and miss me.
10) I have experienced really amazing things and have grown so much in the past 4 months… and I just have a really awesome life.
Today was probably the least conventional Thanksgiving I’ve ever had, but it was Thanksgiving to me. Not because I ate turkey and stuffing and passed out on the couch but because I got to spend it with some really great people. I’ve realized that these people in the program with me are remarkable individuals and are all so unique. I’m really lucky I’ve gotten the chance to study abroad, but most of all make some really good friends in the process. So even though I didn’t finish my night by watching football and laying on the couch like I do every Thanksgiving, today was still really special in it’s own way. And definitely one that I’ll remember forever.
So a special shout out to any Fall 2014 SIS people that are reading this blog post for some reason… Thanks for making my Thanksgiving special.
P.S.: Tomorrow I'll be thankful for Barcelona...
Until next time,
Ciao
